On songe aux \u0153uvres de <em>Charles Dickens<\/em>, <em>Jules Verne<\/em> ou, en l\u2019occurrence, <em>Victor Hugo<\/em>. Pendant plus d\u2019une trentaine d\u2019ann\u00e9es, le septi\u00e8me art constitue un v\u00e9ritable terrain d\u2019exp\u00e9rimentation, o\u00f9 l\u2019on pouvait d\u00e9finir un genre ou un effet de mise en sc\u00e8ne. Puis la fin des ann\u00e9es&nbsp;1920 marque la transition entre le muet et le parlant. Cette p\u00e9riode charni\u00e8re fournit n\u00e9anmoins de remarquables m\u00e9trages, sorte de chant du cygne \u00e0 une vision r\u00e9volue de ce m\u00e9dia culturel. Parmi ceux-ci, <strong>L\u2019Homme qui rit<\/strong> n\u2019est pas forc\u00e9ment l\u2019exemple le plus connu, tout comme le roman \u00e9ponyme pour son auteur. Avant de s\u2019orienter vers le drame, voire la farce humaine, le pr\u00e9sent m\u00e9trage interpelle par ses compositions obscures, ses moments surr\u00e9alistes pour traduire la d\u00e9tresse du protagoniste face \u00e0 la violence de son environnement. Ces premi\u00e8res minutes peuvent \u00eatre consid\u00e9r\u00e9es comme les ultimes fulgurances de l\u2019expressionnisme allemand. Cela sans oublier quelques effets de fondu encha\u00een\u00e9 ponctuels et n\u00e9anmoins pertinents. On se pla\u00eet aussi \u00e0 distinguer des mouvements dynamiques qui exploitent quelques \u00e9l\u00e9ments du d\u00e9cor, comme la grande roue. \u00c0 partir d\u2019une vue subjective, le spectateur a alors l\u2019impression d\u2019\u00eatre un visiteur t\u00e9moin de cet instant, m\u00eame s\u2019il reste passif et impuissant aux \u00e9v\u00e8nements. Cette \u00e9nergie tient \u00e9galement \u00e0 la sollicitation de nombreux figurants, permettant d\u2019exposer les remous d\u2019une foule dense. Le cin\u00e9aste souligne ainsi l\u2019effet de masse au gr\u00e9 des d\u00e9ambulations de la f\u00eate foraine, dans la rue ou pendant une repr\u00e9sentation de spectacle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Au regard de la profusion d\u2019intervenants, on peut appr\u00e9cier des visages marqu\u00e9s par la duret\u00e9 de l\u2019existence. Nantis de v\u00e9ritables \u00ab&nbsp;gueules&nbsp;\u00bb, ces physiques viennent renforcer le r\u00e9alisme de l\u2019histoire. Qu\u2019il s\u2019agisse de personnages secondaires ou de figurants, on distingue les expressions guind\u00e9es et emphatiques d\u2019individus qui se moquent du caract\u00e8re clownesque du protagoniste, sans se rendre compte qu\u2019ils arborent eux aussi un masque. Face \u00e0 l\u2019humanit\u00e9 toute candide de Gwynplaine, la notion de monstruosit\u00e9 reste au c\u0153ur des pr\u00e9occupations. Elle n\u2019est pas apparente, mais latente, presque secr\u00e8te. Pour autant, elle peut ressurgir dans la manifestation d\u2019un comportement, d\u2019un acte ou d\u2019un jugement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center\">\u00ab\u00a0<strong>L\u2019Homme qui rit<\/strong> constitue un film remarquable \u00e0 bien des \u00e9gards\u00a0\u00bb<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>En cela, <strong>L\u2019Homme qui rit<\/strong> brasse des th\u00e9matiques similaires \u00e0 celles d\u2019une autre \u0153uvre embl\u00e9matique de <em>Victor Hugo<\/em>&nbsp;: <strong>Notre-Dame de Paris<\/strong>. Les deux personnages restent \u00e0 la marge de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 et, en d\u00e9pit d\u2019une acceptation tout hypocrite, ils se heurtent au refus de la diff\u00e9rence. L\u2019un se cache dans une cath\u00e9drale, l\u2019autre masque autant que possible sa difformit\u00e9 sous une \u00e9charpe ou sa main. Alors que Quasimodo dispose de la bienveillance d\u2019Esmeralda, Gwynplaine partage son amour avec Dea. La c\u00e9cit\u00e9 de celle-ci est consid\u00e9r\u00e9e par l\u2019int\u00e9ress\u00e9 comme une dissimulation malhonn\u00eate de son sourire perp\u00e9tuel. D\u2019un point de vue esth\u00e9tique, le m\u00e9trage de <em>Paul Leni<\/em> est l\u2019une des derni\u00e8res prouesses du cin\u00e9ma muet et de l\u2019expressionnisme allemand, m\u00eame s\u2019il est produit \u00e0 Hollywood. Au-del\u00e0 d\u2019une r\u00e9alisation moderne et pleine de ma\u00eetrise, on appr\u00e9cie aussi cette atmosph\u00e8re gothique. Cette derni\u00e8re am\u00e8ne son sujet avec mesure avant de s\u2019orienter vers un drame historique o\u00f9 la dimension sociale est pr\u00e9pond\u00e9rante pour d\u00e9peindre la b\u00eatise humaine, dans toutes ses nuances. Cette adaptation pr\u00e9figure d\u00e9j\u00e0 du <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lavisqteam.fr\/?p=27616\">Freaks<\/a><\/strong> de <em>Tod Browning<\/em> et, quelques d\u00e9cennies plus tard, d\u2019<strong>Elephant Man <\/strong>de <em>David Lynch<\/em>.
