Il s\u2019agit d\u2019un sous-genre assez agressif, mais qui arrive \u00e0 composer de longues plages musicales o\u00f9 les musiciens sont mis \u00e0 rude \u00e9preuve. Parmi ces plus fervents d\u00e9fenseurs, on retrouve <strong>Rivers of Nihil<\/strong>, groupe am\u00e9ricain fond\u00e9 en 2009 \u00e0 Reading en Pennsylvanie. Le groupe sort rapidement deux EP en 2011 et 2012, avant de se lancer dans un premier vrai album avec <strong>The Conscious Seed of Light<\/strong> en 2013 chez Metal Blade Records, label que le groupe ne quittera plus (ou pas, on ne sait pas ce que l\u2019avenir nous r\u00e9serve). Le probl\u00e8me avec <strong>Rivers of Nihil<\/strong>, c\u2019est le line-up qui bouge pas mal. Si l\u2019on excepte les deux membres fondateurs que sont <em>Adam Biggs<\/em> \u00e0 la basse et <em>Brody Uttley<\/em> \u00e0 la guitare, pour le reste, \u00e7a bouge pas mal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>D\u2019ailleurs, <strong>The Work<\/strong>, qui est le quatri\u00e8me album studio du groupe, a une petite particularit\u00e9, puisque c\u2019est le dernier album de la formation, mais c\u2019est le dernier sur lequel on va pouvoir entendre <em>Jake Dieffenbach<\/em> au chant, ainsi que <em>Jon Topore<\/em> \u00e0 la guitare rythmique, les deux ayant d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de tirer leur r\u00e9v\u00e9rence en 2022. On pourrait alors croire \u00e0 un effort douloureux, fait dans une certaine tension, mais globalement, c\u2019est tout le contraire qui va se produire. En effet, The Work est un album long, ambitieux, qui propose de longues plages techniques, et qui ne va pas faire les choses \u00e0 moiti\u00e9. D\u2019ailleurs, le premier titre met les choses au clair, puisque <em>The Tower (Theme from \u00ab&nbsp;The Work&nbsp;\u00bb)<\/em> est une longue introduction de plus de quatre minutes qui monte crescendo, affichant un c\u00f4t\u00e9 doux, mais aussi un aspect ultra virulent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le groupe ne se cache pas devant une technique \u00e0 toute \u00e9preuve, et arrive \u00e0 trouver un bel \u00e9quilibre, ce qui donne \u00e0 cet album une aura tr\u00e8s particuli\u00e8re. <em>Dreaming Black Clockwork<\/em> est un morceau percutant, violent, et qui poss\u00e8de m\u00eame des moments que l\u2019on pourrait qualifier de Djent, surtout dans son d\u00e9marrage. Alors oui, il y aura quelques errances \u00e9th\u00e9r\u00e9es, mais il y a une r\u00e9elle recherche d\u2019\u00e9nergie et d\u2019ambiance relativement sombre. Pour contrebalancer cela, tr\u00e8s rapidement, les am\u00e9ricains envoient <em>Wait<\/em>. Et durant quatre minutes, on aura l\u2019impression de planer au-dessus des nuages, avec un titre qui fait tr\u00e8s Classic Rock dans sa m\u00e9lodie et sa rythmique. Si l\u2019on retrouve quelques beuglements, ils sont en fond, pour rappeler qui on est en train d\u2019\u00e9couter. Et la formation va constamment jouer sur cette ambivalence. En abordant <em>Focus<\/em>, <strong>Rivers of Nihil<\/strong> renoue avec quelque chose de plus frontal, de plus rentre-dedans.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img src=\"https:\/\/cdn-p.smehost.net\/sites\/7f9737f2506941499994d771a29ad47a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Rivers-Of-Nihil-2021.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Le travail de la basse permet d\u2019insister sur une ambiance lourde, et le morceau, assez simple dans sa composition, envoie une belle \u00e9nergie, et un savoir-faire qui se rapproche fortement d\u2019un m\u00e9tal progressif. <em>Clean<\/em> sera encore plus percutant, avec notamment des fulgurances qui \u00e9voquent du Black, avec des paroles relativement sales. Le groupe ne fait pas les choses \u00e0 moiti\u00e9, et il arrive aussi \u00e0 changer de rythme au sein d\u2019un m\u00eame morceau. Apr\u00e8s ces deux titres relativement virulents, <em>The Void from Which no Sound Escapes<\/em> va d\u00e9rouler un joli tapis \u00e0 la fois \u00e9trange et envo\u00fbtant. Le d\u00e9but est tr\u00e8s brumeux, tr\u00e8s m\u00e9lodique, et on sent qu\u2019il y a une vraie corr\u00e9lation entre le titre et l\u2019ambiance recherch\u00e9e. C\u2019est \u00e0 la fois beau et pourtant tendu, et le groupe offre une partition sans faute avec un gros solo de gratte et m\u00eame du saxophone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apr\u00e8s ce morceau fleuve, les am\u00e9ricains reviennent \u00e0 quelque chose de beaucoup plus brutal avec <em>More&nbsp;?<\/em>. On s\u2019approche doucement du Black, tout en y apportant des notions de Death relativement r\u00e9jouissantes. Il s\u2019agit-l\u00e0 du titre le plus destructeur de l\u2019album, avec du blast \u00e0 tout va et une violence purement gratuite. Puis <em>Tower 2<\/em> offre un interlude salvateur et doux avant de redynamiter tout le monde avec Episode, un long titre qui souffle le calme et la violence. L\u00e0 encore, le groupe r\u00e9ussit son pari en faisant du complexe lisible, et en changeant de rythme au fur et \u00e0 mesure de la m\u00e9lodie. <em>Maybe One Day<\/em> revient \u00e0 une sorte de ballade doucereuse et insidieuse, permettant alors de donner plus de poids au dernier titre, <em>Terrestria IV&nbsp;: Work<\/em>, et ses onze minutes. Un morceau pleinement r\u00e9ussi, qui montre, si besoin l\u2019en est, tout le talent de la formation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Au final, <strong>The Work<\/strong>, le quatri\u00e8me et dernier album en date (au moment o\u00f9 j\u2019\u00e9cris ces lignes) de <strong>Rivers of Nihil<\/strong>, est une belle r\u00e9ussite, qui arrive \u00e0 allier complexit\u00e9 et lisibilit\u00e9. Relativement long (plus d\u2019une heure d\u2019\u00e9coute), l\u2019album suit son concept sans jamais le l\u00e2cher et propose un sacr\u00e9 voyage, entre douceur \u00e9th\u00e9r\u00e9e et violence percutante.
